A Poor widow poured her heartfelt as God Vindicated her over her land
I want to confirm to you today two things that you probably may know, but take for granted.
1. That there is God Almighty who fights for the downtrodden, the oppressed and the less privileged.
2. That the Judiciary, (no matter how you look at their inadequacies or shortcomings) is still the hope of the common man.
The woman right beside me in this picture is our client at Eloheem Chambers . She is a widow with no immediate children in her life right now.
She was sued before the Benue State High Court sitting in Makurdi in 2018, and her piece of land which she acquired sometime in 1978 and has been staying on same since then till date was claimed in the suit. While Mama was on the land, a Certificate of Occupancy was clandestinely procured on the same land without her knowledge. This was the basis of the plaintiff's claim. Upon being served with the suit, Mama became heartbroken. Downcast.
Depressed. And tired. Seeing that her now only valuable possession in life was about to be taken away from her.
Not only did she know what exactly she would do in the circumstances, she had no money to hire a legal Practitioner to defend her in the suit. It was in her state of quandary that Mr. Akor Godwin introduced her to us at Elohim Chambers.
We took up the matter pro bono (i.e free of charge) and defended Mama to the best of our ability. My Principal, the kind-hearted Terhemen Oscar Aorabee - Gagajav Esq ensured that Mama's case was handled without any levity as he was fierce and stood strong to ensure that we give the case our all. All staff of Elohim Chambers put in their best in this case.
Countless times I have prayed both secretly and publicly to God to vindicate Mama. On my birthday which was 11th of October, (exactly one month ago) I didn't ask God for riches or any other thing, I asked God for a birthday gift which was judgment in Mama's favour.
Today, God vindicated her. The suit against her was dismissed by the BENUE state High Court 8 Makurdi which nullified the Plaintiff's purported C of O on Mama's land as it was improperly issued. Judgment was also entered in Mama's favour in the terms of the reliefs in her counter claim and the sum of N500, 000 only also awarded to her for her litigation troubles. She cried sincere tears of joy when I informed her that she won her case. She told me she prayed all through the night for God to show himself. And God actually did.
Dear friends, there is God. He helps the poor. He is also the husband of widows and father to the fatherless. Be careful as you deal with them. He just came through for Mama today.
There is also the Judiciary, the last hope of those who are accused wrongly. They may not be perfect. But in many ways than one, they have come through for people who are nothing and have nothing. Today is one of such instances.
In my over 10 years of law practice, this is one victory I will live to cherish. Especially that we handled this case pro bono.
