The greatest thing that can happen to a nation is good leadership, a good leader brings transformation and development in a family, society, country, nation and the world at large. The greatest need of our dear nation is leadership if the leaders are good, the nation have no reason to be bad.
The quality of a nation, an organisation or a family can never be better than the quality of the leadership that is over it (Isa. 3:12; 9:16).
The greatest need of humanity today is leadership.
The problem of the average person on the street today is that he/she does know how to live, succeed and make headway with his/her life.
What is Leadership?
Judges 6:33-35
Leadership is the ability to inspire and influence a group of people/an individual to achieve worthwhile goals. It is also the ability to organize, coordinate and leader group of people in the better path to achieve a given objective/objectives.
The key to successful leadership is the ability to lead others successfully.
HOW TO BECOME A LEADER.
Judges 6:11-16.
1. BY SEEING YOURSELF THE WAY GOD SEES YOU.
Life is about discovering who we are,
leading is about striving to become better than we are, and helping everything and everyone around us to become better too.
Even though you are destined for success in life , lack of understanding of who you are will limit you.
Psalm 82:5-7 and psalm 49:20.
I see this as a major reason why many fail.
So many messages/books on purpose discovery, career discovery and even on knowing the right person to marry, but little or no emphasis on self discovery.
It can be concluded that if you know your purpose, marital partner or career but fail to know or discover who will do that thing, you might end up failing even though you are loaded not to fail.
Who are you?
If everybody sees you as a success but deep inside you, you see your self as a failure, the chances is high, you will end up failing.
Until you know who you are, you will not know the right company to journey with, what to do, who to marry and hence you will end up living the life of someone else and ultimately becomes what someone else is meant to be.
How you see yourself is called self image ( that’s the picture you have in your mind of your self) and from this we have self esteem ( how you feel about your self), self respect ( how you treat your self) and self confidence.
To be successful in life, you must have an honest view of your self. Having too high or too low self image is equally dangerous.
Having too high image of your self leads to the problem of pride and having too low image of your self leads to low self worth.
2. BY EMBRACING WHO YOU ARE AND SOLVE PROBLEMS.
The quickest way to leadership is problem solving.
Leaders are ordinary people who discover their greatness, unique abilities or potentials while trying to overcome extraordinary challenges.
This is also true for other amazing examples we can see in the Bible and our contemporary world.
God helps you to:
▪ Solve your own problem first ( Joseph; David; Gideon and Daniel)
▪ Help others solve their own problems by the things you have discovered when solving your own problems. (2 Cor 1:3-4, Luke 4:18)
3. BY UNDERSTANDING THE ESSENCE OF LEADERSHIP.
For you to be able to become the leaders God want you to be, You must understand Why we need leaders? (Mk. 10:42-45).
The essence of leadership is SERVICE.
John 12:24
“Truly, truly, I say to you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it stays alone: but if it die, it brings forth much fruit”.
Sacrifice here mean giving your self to a greater course ( serving others wholeheartedly).
According to 1 king 3: 3-12, king Solomon discovered who he is and who is meant to be through sacrifice .
Prior to the enthronement of Solomon, not too much was expected of ancient kings: they were only required to govern, handle state affairs and go to war but Solomon had a complete understanding of who he is and redefined kingship in his time.
He was not just a king, he was a writer, a poet, a real estate business person, a horticulturist, a marine engineer, an animal biologist, creative artist etc
In his time he wrote 3000 proverbs, 1500 songs.
if you don’t discover YOU, even though you are too loaded to fail, you will underperform, underutilize and hence under-appropriated.
You become valuable and needed when you cultivate the habit of leadership (Mt. 9:36-38).
WHAT ARE THE THINGS GOD SAW IN THE 300 THAT MAKES THEM EMERGE AS LEADERS (CHARACTERISTICS OF A LEADER).
Judges 7:1-8
1. Leaders have character (Humility).
Judge 7 Verse 2
It’s not coincidence that this is the first quality mentioned.
I believe the first test of a truly great man is in his humility.” ~John Ruskin
“Humility is the foundation of all the other virtues hence, in the soul in which this virtue does not exist there cannot be any other virtue except in mere appearance.”
“It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels.”
“Humility is the solid foundation of all virtues.” ~Confucius
2. Leaders have Positive attitude (Courage)
Judges 7: 3
Joshua 1:7-8: “Only be you strong, and very courageous, then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success."
Andrew Jackson- one man with courage makes a majority.
Lack of Courage makes us give excuses.
George Washington- “99% OF FAILURE COME FROM PEOPLE WHO MAKE EXCUSES
3. Leaders have visions
Judges 7 Verse 5
VISION THE HEART OF LEADERSHIP.
Vision is the major characteristics of leadership.
If you lack vision, you can’t survive in the plan of God.
Vision simply defined is revelation; ability to see.
A leader sees more than others see, sees farther than others see and sees before
others do.
To be successful, you must see a future that is Better, More Successful or More Desirable for you than the Present.
Proverbs 29:18, we can
also say, “Where there is no revelation, the people perish or cast of restrain.”
Eyes that look are common, but eyes that see are few.
This means you look with your outer eyes but you see with your inner eyes.
That means it is the few that see that lead those that look. If you have vision, it will throw you ahead of your contemporaries and ahead of the crowd.
Great leaders know where to go, know how to get there and how to persuade others to go with them (I Chronicles 12:32).
Spiritual leadership is impossible without vision (Matt. 15:14).
4. Leaders have Self Discipline
Judges 7 Verse 5
Plato- “The first and best victory is to conquer self.”
Bum Philips- “The only discipline that lasts is self-discipline.”
Jim Whittaker- “You can never conquer the mountain. You can only conquer yourself.”
5. Leaders Know and Focus on What is Important.
Judges 7 Verse 5
Life is like a camera, focus on what’s important and you’ll capture it perfectly.”
Margaret Thatcher- “Don’t follow the crowd, let the crowd follow you.”
