Democracy Day is a national public day in Nigeria to commemorate the restoration of democracy in 1999, commemorated on 12 June. Until 2018, it was celebrated annually on May 29. It is a tradition that has been held annually, beginning in year 2000. This journey of Nationhood, called democracy is anchored on the People, as nigerians; we are renewed in hope.
My fellow Nigerians, let me start by congratulating everyone of us for being alive to witness the celebration of another Democracy Day, today, the 12th day of June 2024. This year also marks our nation’s 25 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
On this day, 31 years ago, we entered our rites of passage to becoming a true and enduring democratic society and we have been flowing through the lines of the reality we envisage.
As we march forward on this beautiful journey, let's embrace unity among ourselves as that alone will bring us the expected harmony and undivided society that we are craving for.
