Sources reveal that Deputy Governorship nominee of a section of the Benue APC, Hon. Sam Ode has made a gift of a black coloured 2021 Range Rover Sports Autobiography Model to Mrs Regina Akume, wife of Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Senator George Akume.
The exotic car is estimated to cost a fortune in the region of N82 million naira and was delivered yesterday to Mrs. Akume at the No. 10 Danube Street, Maitama residence of Senator Akume who is leader of the APC in Benue State.
Inside sources hint that the gift may not be unconnected with Sam Ode's desperate bid to maintain hold on his nomination as running mate to Revd. Fr. Hyacinth Alia who is the Governorship candidate of the Akume led section of the APC in Benue.
That section of the APC had only the other week nominated Sam Ode as Fr. Alia's running mate, but in swift reaction, notable leaders of the party from the Benue South, where the nominated running mate hails from, had rejected the choice.
Former Senate President, Chief Ameh Ebutte, Gen. (Rtd.) Lawrence Onoja, Alhaji Usman Abubakar aka Young Alhaji and a number of others had in a correspondence denounced the nomination as not being the result of broad based consultation and lacking in acceptance with the party's members in the Benue South.
But Senator Akume has been adamant on his choices in the party, such as that of Fr. Alia as Guber candidate, a decision still being challenged in court by heavyweight members of the party including Engr. Barnabas Gemade, Chief Mike Aondoakaa, SAN and Prof. Terhemba Shija.
Akume is also known to have unilaterally handed the House of Representatives ticket of the APC for the Gboko/Tarka Federal Constituency to his wife, Regina, against the wish of majority of party faithful there who preferred the youthful and more popular Godwin Ashinya Dajoh, a son of Senator Akume's uncle.
The nomination of Sam Ode as running mate to Fr. Alia is another of Senator Akume's unpopular decisions in Benue APC heading into the 2023 elections, one which has already triggered deep crisis in the party.
Sam Ode's gift of an N82 million Range Rover Sports to Mrs. Regina Akume is already being interpreted as a desperate gambit to cling to his nomination even as it is clear APC members in the Benue South do not accept him as a choice to that position.
