LAGOS, Nigeria — Over the next five years, Huawei, a leading global provider of information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure and smart products, will invest $150 million in digital talent development, benefiting about three million youngsters.
Huawei's Chairman, Liang Hua, made the announcement while speaking about some of the company's massive rides across Africa.
"We are pleased to announce Huawei's Seeds for the Future 2.0 program. We will invest $150 million in this program over the next five years as part of our commitment to developing talent. This program will help college students and young people enhance their digital skills. Another 3 million people are likely to benefit from this program."
"Nigeria is positioning itself to be the continent's leader in digitization," said Nigeria's Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami. Burkina Faso already has a digital economy ministry, but we have a lot of advantages."
According to him, the country's population and location, as well as the contribution of ICT to GDP and the level of ICT knowledge among Nigerians, are all benefits.
He went on to say that the government would be more proactive in ICT in the future by implementing emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things, Robotics, and Virtual Reality.
He predicted that in a few years, Nigerians would no longer need to fly to India or other foreign countries for medical treatment since 5G technology will allow surgeons to operate on patients anywhere in the world.
He advised the 10 Nigerian students chosen for the Huawei internship program from various colleges to work hard.
"Information and communication technology has the ability to employ and elevate millions of Nigerians out of poverty," the minister stated.
He praised Huawei for investing in young people as part of its corporate social responsibility efforts.
Mr. Trevor Liu, Managing Director of Huawei Technologies Nigeria Limited, claimed, "Nigeria has the greatest population in Africa." These young people are the continent's most valuable resource, and they will drive the continent's economy in the future.
"Huawei collaborates with Nigerian governments, educational institutions, and industry to give future leaders with the most up-to-date global information and opportunity to utilize that knowledge in order to achieve a brighter future for the continent."
