A member of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry has explained why the leaked #EndSARS report contains inaccuracies.
The report in circulation included typographical problems, according to Temitope Majekodunmi, a youth representative on the panel, but these were remedied before it was authorized and delivered to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
A copy of the panel's report on the Lekki shooting event and police brutality cases was leaked and went viral on social media only hours after it was handed to Mr Sanwo-Olu.
Mr Sanwo-Olu formed a four-man committee to investigate the report within two weeks and "put forth the white paper that would be reviewed before the Lagos State executive council and presented as the white paper coming from the panel of inquiry," according to the report.
Errors
On the night of October 20, 2020, at least 46 persons were shot dead, injured with bullets, or attacked by security officers at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos, according to the panel's final report.
Pro-government supporters, on the other hand, have sought to discredit the report, claiming that it is filled with inaccuracies and a testament to the panel's terrible work.
However, Mr Majekodunmi stated that the report in circulation included typographical problems, but that the final copy was authorized once the flaws were addressed.
The leaked paper is "not far from the original," he claimed, "but I can certify that the original is free of all the detected mistakes."
He claimed that the final version, which was sent to the governor, was free of the discovered mistakes.
"Furthermore, after multiple inspections for typographical mistakes, omission of some documents but replicated as final edit; final, final edits, and final of the finals of edit," Mr Majekodunmi said.
"Regardless of the errors found, it's critical that we stick to the facts of the findings and the recommendations made therein, as well as interpret them correctly." This paper is comprehensive in terms of peace and justice rationale. I'm sure you've gone through the specifics with each other.
"Pages 11-15, Background on page 16; General proceedings on pages 17-280, Panel findings on pages 281 304, a compendium of suggestions on pages 305-308, and the conclusion on page 309," he stated.
"The panel's conclusion confirms our belief that security officers who were supposed to protect us harmed and/or murdered nonviolent protestors. The panel's findings, and most significantly, its recommendations, are now available to the public."
"Who braved the lengthy Judicial Panel hearings to arrive at what we considered "Appropriate Justice" for all who may have been wronged or aggrieved," Mr Majekodunmi said of the survivors and advocates.
